A House Divided
(Mat 12:25-26 NIV) Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them,
"Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every
city or household divided against itself will not stand. {26} If Satan drives
out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?
Is the Church a “House Divided?”
(Luke 12:51-53 NIV) Do you think I came to bring peace on earth?
No, I tell you, but division. {52} From now on there will be five in one
family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.
{53} They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother
against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against
daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
Is the Church a “House Divided?”
(John 17 NIV) After Jesus said this, he looked toward
heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your
Son may glorify you. {2} For you granted him authority over all people that he
might give eternal life to all those you have given him. {3} Now this is
eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom
you have sent. (Not know of you.) {4} I
have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. {5}
And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before
the world began. {6} "I have revealed you to those whom you gave me
out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed
your word. {7} Now they know that everything you have given me comes from
you. {8} For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They
knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
{9} I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you
have given me, for they are yours. {10} All I have is yours, and all you have
is mine. And glory has come to me through them. {11} I will remain in the world
no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy
Father, protect them by the power of your name--the name you gave me--so
that they may be one as we are one. {12} While I was with them, I protected
them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the
one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. {13} "I am
coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so
that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. {14} I have given
them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any
more than I am of the world. {15} My prayer is not that you take them out
of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. {16} They are not of
the world, even as I am not of it. {17} Sanctify them by the truth; your word
is truth. {18} As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.
{19} For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. {20} "My
prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me
through their message, {21} that all of them may be one, Father, just as you
are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe
that you have sent me. {22} I have given them the glory that you gave me, that
they may be one as we are one: {23} I in them and you in me. May they be
brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved
them even as you have loved me. {24} "Father, I want those you have
given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have
given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. {25}
"Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and
they know that you have sent me. {26} I have made you known to them, and will
continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in
them and that I myself may be in them."
(Gal 5:13-26 NIV) You, my brothers, were called to be free.
But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature ; rather, serve one
another in love. {14} The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love
your neighbor as yourself." {15} If you keep on biting and devouring
each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. {16} So I
say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the
sinful nature. {17} For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the
Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in
conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. {18} But if you
are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. {19} The acts of the sinful
nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; {20}
idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish
ambition, dissensions, factions {21} and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit
the kingdom of God. {22} But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, {23} gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law. {24} Those who belong to Christ Jesus have
crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. {25} Since we live
by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. {26} Let us not become
conceited, provoking and envying each other.
(Eph 5:1-12 NIV) Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly
loved children {2} and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave
himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. {3} But among
you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity,
or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. {4} Nor should
there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but
rather thanksgiving. {5} For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or
greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of
Christ and of God. {6} Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because
of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. {7} Therefore
do not be partners with them. {8} For you were once darkness, but now you
are light in the Lord. Live as children of light {9} (for the fruit of the
light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) {10} and find out what
pleases the Lord. {11} Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of
darkness, but rather expose them. {12} For it is shameful even to mention
what the disobedient do in secret.
(2 Tim 3:1-7 NIV) But mark this: There will be terrible times
in the last days. {2} People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful,
proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, {3} without
love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the
good, {4} treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers
of God-- {5} having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing
to do with them. {6} They are the kind who worm their way into homes and
gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are
swayed by all kinds of evil desires, {7} always learning but never able to
acknowledge the truth.
(Titus 3:8-11 NIV) This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you
to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to
devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and
profitable for everyone. {9} But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies
and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and
useless. {10} Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time.
After that, have nothing to do with him. {11} You may be sure that such a man
is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.
(Mat 7:21 NIV) "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord,
Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my
Father who is in heaven.
There should be unity in the church; that is in the body of Christ. It is not doctrine that saves us: It’s faith in Christ and a willingness to follow Him. By grace he paid the price for our sins and thus by faith, demonstrated by how we live our lives, we can obtain salvation. Doctrines are simply teachings or understanding of something. Some are true and some are false. True doctrines are preferred but people can have a poor understanding of some things without being lost. Will a misunderstanding of the following necessarily lead to damnation?
1. State of the dead.
2. How to baptize.
3. The true nature of the relationship between the Father and the Son.
4. Where we will spend eternity.
5. Whether or not the Lord’s Supper should be celebrated on a particular day.
6. Observation of certain Holy Days.
7. Whether or not hell is a place of eternal torment.
8. Was creation a matter of 6 literal days or 6 figurative days?
It is very important that we try to understand the word of God. But our understanding need not be perfect or no one would be saved.
Is the Church a “House Divided?” Most certainly not! But there are people that claim to be part of the church that are in fact not a part of it at all. We just saw some of the identifying traits of such people.
Such people have no place in the church and are not a part of the church, the body of Christ. But total agreement is not a requirement. You need to make judgments but be careful how you judge. It is up to you to make judgments about whom you will accept but it is not up to you to make judgments about salvation.
(Rom 14:4 NIV) Who are you to judge someone else's servant?
To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able
to make him stand.
(Rom 14:1 NIV) Accept him whose faith is weak, without
passing judgment on disputable matters.
(Rom 15:7 NIV) Accept one another, then, just as Christ
accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
(James 1:19-22 NIV) My dear brothers, take note of this:
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
{20} for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
{21} Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent
and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. {22} Do not
merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
