The Gospel Message
The Gospel message is simply this, “Good News.” That is what the word, “Gospel” means. The good news is that there is a wonderful life after death. But what is good news but a reprieve from bad news? The bad news is that you deserve to die and therefore are not qualified for that wonderful life after death. But the good news doesn’t end with that sad fact. There is a way to escape your deserved fate. Now that really is good news. That is the Gospel Message.
You, me, us, all of us, everyone that has ever lived (except for one) are sinners. We cheat, lie, steal, murder, and engage in every perverse, undesirable act we can think of. Our righteousness is as dirty rags to One that is perfect. When we aren’t actually doing wrong we are thinking about doing wrong.
(Mark 7:20-23 NIV) He went on: "What comes out of a man is
what makes him 'unclean.' {21} For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil
thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, {22} greed, malice,
deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. {23} All these evils come
from inside and make a man 'unclean.'"
(Rom 1:20-32 NIV) For since the creation of the world God's
invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly
seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
{21} For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave
thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were
darkened. {22} Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools {23} and
exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man
and birds and animals and reptiles. {24} Therefore God gave them over in the
sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their
bodies with one another. {25} They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and
worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever
praised. Amen. {26} Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even
their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. {27} In the same
way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with
lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received
in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. {28} Furthermore, since
they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them
over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. {29} They have become
filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full
of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, {30} slanderers,
God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil;
they disobey their parents; {31} they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
{32} Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they
not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who
practice them.
Fine, but what about the good news part.
(Rom 6:23 NIV) For the wages of sin is death, but the
gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(John 3:16-18 NIV) "For God so loved the world that
he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life. {17} For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the
world, but to save the world through him. {18} Whoever believes in him
is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because
he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
(Rom 3:19-26 NIV) Now we know that whatever the law says, it
says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and
the whole world held accountable to God. {20} Therefore no one will be declared
righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become
conscious of sin. {21} But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has
been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. {22} This righteousness
from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is
no difference, {23} for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
{24} and are justified
freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
{25} God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.
He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left
the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- {26} he did it to demonstrate his
justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those
who have faith in Jesus.
This was good news for us but it exacted a great cost from the One that redeemed us.
(Mat 20:18-19 NIV) "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the
Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.
They will condemn him to death {19} and will turn him over to the Gentiles to
be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised
to life!"
You see the Gospel message is actually a love story. Remember it was love that caused God to allow His Son to be killed as He was.
(John 15:12-14 NIV) My command is this: Love each other as I
have loved you. {13} Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his
life for his friends. {14} You are my friends if you do what I command.
I started by saying the good news is that there is a wonderful life available after one dies. That wonderful life is contingent on you accepting Jesus as your Lord and following Him in all your ways. But just what is that wonderful life like?
(1 Cor 13:12-13 NIV) Now we see but a poor reflection as in a
mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am
fully known. {13} And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But
the greatest of these is love.
(Rev 21:3-5 NIV) And I heard a loud voice from the throne
saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with
them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their
God. {4} He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or
mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
{5} He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything
new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are
trustworthy and true."
There you have it, the Gospel message. All have sinned, the wages of sin is death and so everyone deserves to be dead forever. But the gift of God is eternal life for those that accept Jesus as their personal Savior and follow Him. That eternal life will be happy and glorious beyond what we can imagine. If you don’t know Jesus as your savior then you need to get to know Him. The good news is in Jesus. Jesus loves you.
